Why does this website exist? This website is the final product of a semester-long project completed by five PPS Scholars: Michaela Beggins, Calli Pastor, Aaron Quate, Lee Sisson, and Caleb Gardner.
We began the project intending to analyze the ethical dimensions of Guilford's investments (in continuation of the work done by the Strategic Reinvestment Scholars over January Term 2014), but found that we were more passionate about the campus discourses surrounding faculty & staff salaries, budgeting issues like those addressed by APSA, and financial transparency as a whole. Because of this, we shifted our focus to increasing student representation on financial decisions at Guilford College. We ultimately decided to that creating a group of students to advise the Budget Committee was the best manner by which to accomplish this. However, we were unaware of the true purpose of the SAC when we made our decision (our understanding was that the SAC was connected to donor advising only, and not to the internal finances of the College). By the time we discovered the truth about the SAC, the semester was quickly coming to a close. However, we'd found a lot of information about the financial processes at Guilford during our search, and we wanted to make sure that other students knew as much as we did, and knew how to take action should they wish to do so. This website contains everything we learned about how financial decisions at Guilford College are made, and how to best influence them - we hope you find the information useful. |
