In the Spring 2014 semester, select members of the Board of Trustees for Guilford College held a "town hall" meeting on campus. The board members introduced themselves, explained why they became involved in Guilford, and described the responsibilities of the various internal committees of the Board. Then, they answered pre-submitted questions from the community, as well as a few questions submitted by the audience before the event began. The board members were each given the opportunity to respond to the questions individually.
Afterwards, the board members & the audience mingled in the lobby of the auditorium to enjoy food and further conversation. |

The Executive Committee governs the Board as a whole, and reviews/selects the President.
The Academic Affairs Committee oversees Guilford's programs and departments on a broad scale. They determine the priority of majors & minors, as well as review tenure and promotions for faculty.
The Finance Committee monitors the long-range financial viability of the College. They make recommendations about tuition based on factors such as enrollment, investments, and the success of the Advancement Committee for a particular year. They receive recommendations from the Campus Budget Committee for the overall budget for the year, but they do not oversee the day-to-day operations & spending of the school.
The Strategic Planning Committee is in charge of creating long-term strategies for ensuring the College's success in coming years. Plans are usually made in increments of five, seven and 10 years, and answer questions such as, 'how do you increase endowment?'
The Trusteeship/Governance Committee chooses new trustee members for the board, usually from two to five people a year. They also assess trustee performance, the Board as a whole, and the Board's bylaws.
The Buildings & Grounds Committee decides capital expenses (what to build/renovate) for the campus per the recommendations of the Budget Committee. This includes deferred maintenance (spending to take care of a facility on an ongoing basis that has been delayed in the interest of meeting that fiscal year's spending goals).
The Advancement Committee cultivates money-raising relationships with alumni, philanthropists, parents of students, and other persons willing to contribute to the school financially. These donations are used in conjunction with funds from the endowment to ensure the continuation of the College financially.
The Student Affairs Committee focuses on the student experience at the College. In the past, this has included choosing to be a "no tobacco" campus, changing the sexual assault policy, making the school "wireless" and updating the website.
The Investment Committee handles the endowment of the College. They decide where and how to invest Guilford's money, in order to maintain and potentially increase the funding available for the school.
The Quaker Life & Diversity Committee ensures the mission, ethos and function of the College is in keeping with its Quaker foundations, both through the administration and the student body itself. It also oversees the recruitment of students from a wide variety of backgrounds in order to create a diverse campus community.
The Audit Committee functions separately from the rest of the Board of Trustees. It reviews the actions of the Board itself to ensure they are legal, especially in relation to financial decisions.
